Unifying Casino Surveillance Systems with Vaidio AI and Mirasys

Challenge

The modern casino environment presents complex security challenges that require sophisticated surveillance solutions. Casino floors typically contain thousands of gaming positions, multiple entrances and exits, restaurants, entertainment venues, and hotel facilities—all requiring constant monitoring. With hundreds or even thousands of cameras generating massive volumes of video data, surveillance teams are tasked with identifying specific individuals and activities in real-time while also conducting detailed investigations when incidents occur.

At the core of this challenge was a critical operational problem: the disconnection between license plate recognition (LPR) and facial recognition systems within casino surveillance departments. These advanced security technologies—essential for identifying persons of interest—operated as isolated islands, each with its own separate monitoring system, user interface, and database.

Surveillance operators were forced to navigate between multiple screens and systems when tracking individuals from parking facilities into the casino property, breaking the chain of identification and creating dangerous security gaps.

As Max Davis from Mirasys explained based on feedback from numerous casino surveillance directors: “They kept telling us how frustrated they were with these siloed systems. Operators were constantly toggling between different interfaces, losing precious seconds that could make the difference between intercepting a problem individual or missing them entirely.”

This fragmentation created multiple challenges:

  1. Operational inefficiency: Security staff had to monitor multiple screens simultaneously, switching between systems to track persons of interest, with no centralized view of all surveillance data
  2. Delayed response time: The lack of integration slowed down the identification and response to security threats, especially when individuals needed to be tracked from vehicles to the gaming floor
  3. Incomplete intelligence: Without unified data, casinos couldn’t make connections between vehicles, individuals, and patterns of behavior, or establish relationships between suspected advantage players working as teams
  4. Missed security opportunities: Many casinos needed to identify several categories of individuals, including self-excluded gamblers (who can legally seek restitution if allowed to gamble), advantage players (professional cheaters), banned visitors, and VIPs requiring enhanced service—all requiring different response protocols

Beyond these basic identification needs, casinos also lacked advanced analytical capabilities that could transform their surveillance operations from reactive to proactive. They were unable to perform sophisticated functions such as cross-camera tracking (following subjects throughout the property), appearance-based searching (finding individuals based on clothing or accessories when faces weren’t visible), and business intelligence gathering around visitor demographics and traffic patterns that could improve operational efficiency.

Impact

The consequences of disjointed surveillance systems extended far beyond mere operational inconvenience. Without an integrated solution connecting license plate recognition and facial recognition, casinos were operating in a reactive security environment that created significant business vulnerabilities and financial risks:

  1. Regulatory and Legal Exposure: Self-excluded problem gamblers could easily gain access to the gaming floor despite registering their vehicles, creating serious legal and financial liability. When these individuals inevitably sought compensation for losses—which they are legally entitled to do—casinos faced substantial financial penalties, regulatory scrutiny, and potential damage to their gaming licenses. For major properties, these claims could potentially amount to millions in annual losses.
  2. Revenue Protection Challenges: Professional advantage players and organized cheating teams had extended windows of opportunity to operate before being identified. By the time surveillance teams correlated information across systems, these individuals could already impact table game revenue significantly. Industry estimates suggest that a skilled advantage player can cost a casino $5,000-$10,000 per hour before being detected.
  3. Operational Strain: Security personnel faced increasing cognitive load from monitoring multiple isolated systems, leading to fatigue, reduced vigilance, and potential oversight of critical security events. This translated to higher staffing requirements and increased training costs to maintain effective coverage across fragmented platforms.
  4. Lost Business Intelligence: Valuable data on visitor patterns, demographics, traffic flow, and player behavior remained trapped in separate systems or went uncollected entirely. Without these insights, casinos missed opportunities to optimize floor layouts, staffing, game placement, and promotional activities that could significantly enhance revenue.
  5. Compromised VIP Experiences: High-value guests often went unrecognized between their arrival in the parking facility and reaching the casino floor, resulting in delayed service recognition. This missed opportunity to provide seamless VIP treatment directly affected customer loyalty, repeat visits, and revenue from the most profitable player segments.

From a technical perspective, the siloed approach created substantial inefficiencies. Separate systems required redundant hardware, duplicate maintenance contracts, multiple vendor relationships, different training programs, and incompatible software updates. This fragmentation not only increased total cost of ownership but also created technological debt that would become increasingly challenging to address as systems aged.

Most critically, the disconnected systems fundamentally handicapped security teams’ ability to proactively address threats by forcing them to manually correlate data across platforms—a process too slow to enable real-time intervention for many security scenarios.

The solution has been successfully implemented at multiple casino properties across the United States. Initial deployments started with targeted implementations focusing on specific high-priority use cases, followed by expansion to additional analytics and camera coverage as value was demonstrated.

The integration created immediate improvements in security operations. In one particularly compelling case, the system demonstrated its proactive security capabilities when security staff received an email alert about a known advantage player who might be targeting their property. The surveillance team simply imported the individual’s photo into the Vaidio system, which then identified the person upon arrival—before they could engage in any fraudulent activity. This early identification prevented potential revenue loss and demonstrated the system’s value as a proactive security tool rather than merely a reactive investigation resource.

Conclusion

Vaidio.ai’s AI-powered analytics, combined with Mirasys’s deep experience in casino video management, helped transform casino surveillance from reactive to proactive security. The solution preserved existing camera infrastructure, enhanced threat detection, and enabled seamless integration—demonstrating that intelligent surveillance doesn’t have to mean high cost or complexity. What began as a project to unify facial recognition and LPR has evolved into a comprehensive security and business intelligence platform delivering value across multiple casino departments.

City Council, Combining Security Into One Solution

A City Council obtained a future proof surveillance solution which offered protection for staff, overall management of facilities and long term cost savings.

THE CHALLENGE

A City Council in the UK wanted to implement a comprehensive and future proof surveillance and security system to ensure that their award winning development, which houses over 2,000 members of staff, would have a seamless integrated security solution. A solution that could provide more than just video and intruder alerts. They were looking to monitor the daily flow of people through their facilities and provide proactive incident response to vulnerable areas. They also wanted to protect property, staff and assets as well as ensuring efficient overall management of the facilities.

THE SOLUTION

Mirasys Enterprise was installed together with over 50 cameras, including Vista HD, Panasonic and analogue. Mirasys Enterprise supports up to 6,400 cameras both IP and analogue. Features such as video recording, live viewing and instant playback, together with advanced search tools provide immediate information to meet their security needs. However to meet the Council’s objectives, plug ins were added such as counting, reporting and object detection.

THE BENEFITS

The system design provided a future proof solution to ensure long-term cost savings could be realized. By integrating Access Control, Intruder Detection, People Counting, Panic Alarms, Audio Monitoring and Video Analytics the overall operation control could be achieved through the surveillance solution. A fully functional multi-screen control room along with controlled access to all interested parties within and outside the building ensured that everyone’s security and operational requirements could be met. The intuitive and easy to use interface helped to reduce the installation time and allowed the staff to be operative with minimum training. The People Counting add-on gave them information about the building usage. This meant adjustments could be made to air conditioning and lighting systems. This helped them make decisions in terms of staffing levels or customer services improvements. Footage and images can be accessed remotely through iPads and   iPhones and information on suspicious ‘alarms’ can be sent via e-mail. Tailored viewing information and access rights for different users can be also created. It means that everyone has access to the information they require and when they need it and the overall security of the site is guaranteed also out of working hours.

Hybrid System Success in Stadium Venue

Mirasys in Public Railway System

WHEN ONE OF THE WORLD’S BIGGEST RAILWAY NETWORKS UPDATES ITS SECURITY SYSTEM, THE PRIMARY REQUIREMENT IS ABSOLUTE RELIABILITY.

The biggest concern for Indian Railways is platform security. The goal was to make it easier to tighten supervision and manage the crowds. The introduction of centralized management and the identification of people and events was also important. 30 million people use the railways on a daily basis and there are over 8000 stations, which means that security is the most important thing. In addition to the VMS, there was a requirement to include an extensive selection of video analytics tools in the integrated security and surveillance system.

Tata Nelco is the local partner of Mirasys in India. “Already in our previous railway projects, Mirasys has shown the ability to support the customer and customise solutions according to requirements. That is why we wanted to continue to work with Mirasys in large-scale command and control solutions.”

From the point of view of the Indian railway police, one of the greatest benefits of Mirasys is its ease of use. In addition, the intelligent video analytics have proven to be a useful tool for the railway authorities.

Smyths Toys Superstores & Mirasys

Smyths Toys Superstores, the largest toy retailer in Ireland, was facing a challenge. They needed an easy-to-use video surveillance system in their stores that could offer better performance and image quality. The problem was that the old system could no longer meet the needs of the stores. The old system could not store data from a sufficient number of days, and the centralised monitoring of different stores was also not possible.

The Mirasys system met the security needs of Smyths Toys Superstores together with its camera partner Axis. According to the Facilities Manager for Smyths Toys Superstores, Stephen McGivern, it is now easy for the store managers to remotely track the events that have happened. The centralised monitoring was also an absolute requirement. “Centralised monitoring for all stores for out of hours alarms was also a key requirement“, Stephen McGivern says.

The Mirasys system supports all of the Axis camera features and is able to detect different events accurately from a wide picture. In particular, the corridor format features that provide efficient surveillance of the aisles have made it possible to reduce the number of cameras.

Stephen McGivern compliments the new security surveillance solution of the stores:
“The key requirements were met, and we acquired an efficient substitute for our previous surveillance system – without a monumental cost increase. Thanks to Mirasys and Axis, we can expand our current video surveillance system as the number of stores increases.”
